TRANSCRIPT OF ARTEFACT C59 - A DAIRY OF WAR TIME DUTIES

Thought to belong to Mr West (shoe repairer), acting as either a special constable, or part of the police war reserves

Note: Throughout this diary the author refers to THCP at Ivinghoe. His early entries make it clear that TH is the Town Hall. I am inclined to think that CP means Check or Control Point and encourage the reader to think of it as such. He also has different ways of referring to times in the hour. He sometimes uses standardised notation e.g 9.15 pm and at other times he uses fractions e.g. 9¼. Two surnames occur frequently as his contacts a S/Sgt ETreacher (a Specials volunteer) and PC 112 Arthur Godleman ( whose name is misspelled throughout and which should read Godliman and who was the regular village policeman) . He also attends Linslade Police Court for lectures at different times. As well as the formal duty periods, usually of 3 hours duration, he turns out for Air Raid warnings and various other tasks (air crash/bomb craters etc). Where a location is followed by three numbers and no other information it says the place of duty, the time on duty, the Check Point time and the time off duty.

July 19^th 1939
Attended lecture at Linslade P Court. Subject 1^st Aid from 8 to 9.

August 11^th 1939
On duty at Travellers Rest cross roads 12 -2am for the Black Out. Police car came and checked up at 1.10 or 1.15, my watch had stopped. 2am off duty.

August 25^th 1939
On duty 2 to 4am. Returned Con. Rogers at 2 at Town hall. Proceeded to Pumping Station, also top of hill. Patrolled village, then made for CP at cross roads. Pitstone 3.15 - proceeded back to Ivinghoe. Patrolled village again until 4am - was relieved by Con. Jellis. At 4am - off duty.

August 27^th 1939
On duty 3 to 5am at Ivinghoe Town Hall. 3am proceeded to Pumping Station, also top of hill. Patrolled village, proceeded to cross roads, Pitstone, for CP at 4am. Left CP 4.20, returned to Ivinghoe, patrolled village until 5am. 5am off duty.

August 29^th 1939
On duty 6 to 7.35am at Tring Cutting Railway Bridge, Pitstone. Royal Train passed at 7.28am. &.35 off duty.

August 30^th 1939
On duty Town Hall Ivinghoe, 8pm. CP Town Hall at 9pm. Patrol of village, off duty 10pm all correct.

September 3^rd Sunday 1939
Patrol duty 9 pm to 12 pm. 9 pm Town Hall. 10 pm Ivinghoe Church. 11 pm Town Hall. (....) Arthur Godleman C 1/3. 12 pm off duty.

. Continued to follow until I reached the camp at Tring turn. Reported same there while seeking their assistance. The tramp had disappeared. Soldier and myself searched without success. 10.30 reported same to Ivinghoe Police House. Description of Tramp, very dark, beard and long black coat, face too unclean for description. Fast walker, trilby hat and slouch. 10.45 off duty.
